EPA Orders Albuquerque Racetrack to Stop Discharges to Protect Rio Grande

An action against the Downs at Albuquerque Inc. and EXPO New Mexico was issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in order to stop the discharges of animal waste, industrial run-off and other pollutants into the Rio Grande.

The New Mexico Environmental Department (NMED) conducted an on-site inspection on November 15, 2011 and found that the facility did not have a properly designed storm water runoff containment structure and also did not have a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit that allows facilities to discharge to U.S. Waters.

Block Jr. to learn his fate Friday

Former PRC commissioner Jerome Block Jr. will find out Friday whether he’ll be going to prison for violating the rules of his plea deal.

We uncovered the corruption that lead to the resignation and criminal charges against Block. And now, there are calls for more people on the PRC to step down.

It’s a case that we’ve been following closely since last year – and Friday it could all come to an end.

Our investigative team blew the lid off this case back in August, when we discovered Block was misusing his state-issued gas card.

Block was forced to step down as PRC commissioner and took a plea deal to avoid jail time on multiple felony corruption charges, including credit card fraud and identity theft.

As part of his plea deal, he was supposed to undergo court-supervised drug treatment.

But since then, we’ve followed him in and out of jail for drug count violations three times.

Best Bites: Santa Fe Granola Company

This week's Best Bites features a New Mexico granola business that promises to be the best granola you ever tasted.

The Santa Fe Granola Company started off as a catering business, but the owners said the granola became their most popular item.

That's when it branched out and started making granola that's now sold at the Railyards in Santa Fe and online at www.santafegranola.com.

They promise great taste, and all-natural ingredients.

"It's almonds, pecans, and then we've got raisins, blueberries, cranberries, sesame seeds, flax seeds and local Santa Fe honey," says owner Tommy Faulkner.

SF double murder suspect spent time in psychiatric hospital

A nationwide alert has been sent out to police to be on the lookout for a double murder suspect out of Santa Fe.

Santa Fe Sheriff's deputies, state and Santa Fe police and U.S. Marshals were taking special precautions as they search for Arthur "Arturo" Anaya, 54 on Wednesday.

Officials said they do not know how he is going to behave because of his history of mental illness.

Anaya allegedly shot and killed Theresa Vigil, 51, and her daughter's boyfriend, Austin Urban, 16, on Monday after confronting the victims about collecting rent.

Wanted posters show a $1 million nationwide arrest warrant for Anaya.

"This information has been sent to every law enforcement agency in the country. They receive it through tele-type, it tells them this individual is wanted in New Mexico for two counts of murder…gives a description and a photograph," said Major Ken Johnson wit the Santa Fe Sheriff's Department.
