Good Friday pilgrims set out for Chimayo

Friday is Good Friday, and the holiday has a special meaning for those who make the annual trip to the Santuario de Chimayo.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 left Albuquerque Thursday afternoon and met up with so many pilgrims that come from all walks of life - from the old to the young - who will all end their trek at the Santuario.

Local and state officials began putting up signs earlier this week warning motorists of the walkers.

And the Santa Fe County Sheriff's office plans to set up a drunk driving check point to make sure offenders and the walking pilgrims don't mix.

Law enforcement officials are urging drivers from Santa Fe to Espanola to Chimayo to be on high alert driving Thursday evening - looking out for those making their way to Chimayo.

People will also be taking part in another Good Friday tradition -the walk up Tome Hill.

The hill is about 30 minutes south of Albuquerque.

Regulators seek proceedings for Santa Fe gas explosion

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico pipeline safety regulators say New Mexico Gas Co. violated state laws and federal regulations during work that occurred before a 2012 explosion in a Santa Fe subdivision.

The Public Regulation Commission's staff is asking the commission to hold formal proceedings on the accident that injured two company workers when they cut into a pipeline with a hacksaw.

According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, the staff's petition recommends that the company be required to take steps to prevent similar accidents.

Investigators say violations include not properly purging the line of gas before working on it and not having workers wear flame-retardant clothes.

The company disputes some of the investigators' finding.

A company spokeswoman declined to comment because the matter is under investigation.

Holy Week pilgrims head to Chimayo

CHIMAYO, N.M. (AP) - Tens of thousands of pilgrims are expected to visit El Santuario de Chimayo during Easter Weekend.

But this year, pilgrims are coming to this adobe chapel in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains under historic circumstances - the "Lourdes of America" is now under the first pope from the Americas.

Just two weeks after Pope Francis was elected, around 50,000 are expect to visit the popular northern New Mexico Catholic shrine, and officials say even more may come because of Argentine-born Pope Francis.

Some pilgrims will make the 90-mile, three-day walk from Albuquerque to the shrine that houses "el pocito," a small pit of holy adobe-colored soil that some believe possesses curing powers.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Robert Garcia says traffic patrols will increase Thursday to Sunday for safety.

The Santa Fe District Attorney said Wednesday that a Santa Fe police officer who shot a 77 year-old man earlier this month won't be charged.

Officer Robert Laramie thought that Robert Dominguez was a burglar, when in reality Domiguez was a caretaker of the home that Laramie was investigating.

Laramie said Domiguez pointed a gun a him and refused to respond to his commands. Laramie shot Dominguez twice in the torso.

Dominguez remains in the hospital in serious condition. Officer Laramie was on leave but has since been reinstated.

Santa Fe introduces same-sex marriage resolution

Will New Mexico be the next state where same sex couples can marry?  It is a question thousands hope will soon be answered.

Wednesday night, Santa Fe Mayor David Coss introduced a resolution saying same-sex marriage marriage is legal in this state.

Richard Peters considers himself one of the lucky ones, someone who has something some people only dream of: the love of his life.

"This is the man that I've been in love with and together with for 12 years," Peters said, with his partner standing beside him.  "He's the man I go to bed with every night and wake up with every morning, and I don't have the right to call him my husband?  I think that's sad."

Peters gathered with a crowd outside Santa Fe City Hall in support of a resolution introduced by Mayor David Coss.
