After years of controversy and court battles, construction is about to start on a new Walmart on Santa Fe’s Southside.
Groundbreaking should happen in the next few weeks. Crews on Tuesday had begun leveling the land.
Local small business owners and activists had filed a lawsuit that made it to the state Supreme Court. The high court refused to hear it however, and a Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Walmart.
A spokeswoman told the Santa Fe New Mexican that the Supercenter should be finished by early next year.
According to numbers posted on Walmart’s corporate website, 14,392 New Mexicans are currently employed in 45 locations across the state. The totals include Sam’s Clubs and a distribution center.
