Furloughs decided for Santa Fe employees

On Wednesday evening, the Santa Fe City Council approved two furlough days for city workers to help balance the current budget.

The furloughs are expected to save about half a million dollars.

City councilors had voted last year to impose furlough days on two holidays, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Memorial Day, but because of contract requirements the city must legally pay workers for those days.

Wednesday’s vote changed the furlough days to Friday, April 22 (Good Friday) and the Friday before Memorial Day at the end of May.

Santa Fe Walmart will be state’s 38th

After years of controversy and court battles, construction is about to start on a new Walmart on Santa Fe’s Southside.

Groundbreaking should happen in the next few weeks. Crews on Tuesday had begun leveling the land.

Local small business owners and activists had filed a lawsuit that made it to the state Supreme Court. The high court refused to hear it however, and a Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Walmart.

A spokeswoman told the Santa Fe New Mexican that the Supercenter should be finished by early next year.

According to numbers posted on Walmart’s corporate website, 14,392 New Mexicans are currently employed in 45 locations across the state. The totals include Sam’s Clubs and a distribution center.
