Scott Owens enters not guilty plea in latest DWI  | Crime

The Santa Fe man acquitted in a crash that killed four teens last year entered a not guilty plea on Wednesday for his latest aggravated DWI charge.

Scott Owens was arrested for aggravated DWI after failing a field sobriety test on March 16.

Owens is scheduled back in court for a pretrial setting in May. Until then, a judge ordered Owens to install an ignition interlock on his vehicle, only drive from home to work and back and wear an ankle bracelet. Owens is also forbidden to drink alcohol.

Owens' attorney said he plans to enter a 30-day rehabilitation program in Colorado but has yet to be admitted.

The arrest came exactly one year after Owens was acquitted of vehicular homicide charges in the deaths of four teens in a crash that rocked the city of Santa Fe.

Owens had admitted to being drunk when his car hit the teens head-on in June 2009, killing four of them and injuring their sober driver, Avree Koffman.

Owen's defense attorney argued the crash was probably caused by another teen driving a car behind Koffman, who hit Koffman's car and caused it to spin into Owens' lane.

A jury acquitted Owens of the vehicular homicide charges.

Though he admitted to driving drunk that night, Owens wasn't charged with it because prosecutors chose to focus on the more serious charges of homicide.

Owens was convicted of DWI in 2001.
