According to an article released by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Six new homeless programs in Albuquerque and Santa Fe have been awarded $1, 673,652 in funding as announced by HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan.
The funding is a significant part of the Obama Administration's strategic plan to prevent and end homelessness.
The funding provides emergency shelter, transitional housing and permanent support for individuals and families.
Donovan stated, “Today's grantees will join the tens of thousands of local programs that are on the front lines of helping those who might otherwise be living on our streets. It's incredible that as we work to recover from the greatest economic decline since the Great Depression, the total number of homeless Americans is declining, in large part because of these funds.”
Three of the new grants in New Mexico are under the Supportive Housing Program (SHP), which offer housing and supportive services that allow homeless persons to live as independently as possible.
The other three of the state's grants fall under the Shelter Plus Care (S+C) which provides housing and services on a long-term basis for homeless persons with disabilities, (serious mental illness, chronic problems with alcohol and/or drugs, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or related diseases) and their families who are living in the streets or in emergency shelters.
