Artists transform house to honor New Mexico

Artists transform house to honor New Mexico

New Mexico’s centennial is right around the corner, and state artists have been planning a way to celebrate.  The artists have decided on a rigorous exhibition called the New Mexico Arts Centennial Project Space. The exhibits feature site-specific art installations in a 300-squarepfoot space. The space has large skylights, high ceilings, and hardwood floors. The art house is located only blocks away from the offices of New Mexico Arts in Santa Fe.

“The project space will give New Mexico artists an opportunity to celebrate New Mexico's centennial with unique visions of the state’s history and the legacy of its people from a contemporary perspective,” said Chuck Zimmer, Manager of Art in Public Places.

The exhibit will be open Mondays through Fridays from 10am to 5pm. Don’t miss this wonderful celebration of New Mexico, and the artists who love it.

An art exhibit entitled “Upcycled, Repurposed, and Post-Industrial” asks people for their plastic bags. The exhibit, created by artist and designer Beth Rekow Olsen, featured furniture created by recycled goods.

The new space at 54 ½ East San Francisco Street, Suite 7, in Santa Fe shows Olsen’s wood, chrome, woven, light, and 100% recycled designs.

The exhibit opening is 5pm to 7pm on July 29th. Visitors are asked to bring their plastic grocery bags to contribute to one of the pieces on display; a giant “pouf” shaped kidney.

If you can’t make it to the opening, “Upcycled, Repurposed, and Post-Industrial” is open Mondays through Fridays from 10am to 5om, and Sundays 12pm to 5pm. Visits are by appointment only. To schedule a time to see the exhibit contact Eileen Braziel at 505-699-4914.

Doors open to the world of a famous artist

Doors open to the world of a famous artist

The German born artist Gustave Baumann, famous for his paintings and woodwork, lived in Santa Fe for a large portion of his life. He built his house on 409 Camino de las Animas in 1923 and today it is open for the public to see.

The 1,800 square-foot adobe house was sold after his death, but his specific artistic flare was kept afresh.

Two years ago the Historic Santa Fe Foundation bought the property and has overseen the careful conservation of Baumann’s home and studio. The Foundation is planning on putting the place up for sale, but before doing so they will allow visitors to tour through the space.

Visitors and locals alike are welcome to come and marvel at this piece of artistic history. The viewings take place Saturdays and Sundays from 10am and 4pm.

Tour donations of $10 are recommended.
